A large part of my technology curriculum for 7th and 8th graders is made up of making them aware of the importance of safe digital citizenry. In my day, (not the middle ages but close), reputation was everything. How we behaved outside of our home could haunt us when we returned. Now, it’s the digital footprint that kids leave that follows them- often MUCH longer than the rumors and innuendos that surrounded students in the 70’s.
This blog by Carolyn Jab just makes sense to me. She writes a column called “Growing Up Online” which addresses many of the issues that parents face today as their kids live more and more of their lives over the internet. I particulary like her column about Your Child’s Digital Footprint. Her other columns are worth a look too. Enjoy.
